About Vessel Fuel Consumption Calculator

Essential bunkering utility for marine engineers. Input cruise speed durations and consumption ratings to compute voyage fuel requirements.

How It Works

  1. 1Input the daily fuel consumption rate (metric tons or liters per day).
  2. 2Enter total estimated voyage days or hours.
  3. 3Specify fuel reserve margin percentage (e.g. 10%).
  4. 4Review total fuel required, including reserve bunkering safety metrics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vessel Fuel & Bunker Consumption Formula

Daily fuel consumption is estimated using the vessel's nominal daily rate adjusted for speed changes according to the Admiralty coefficient cube law: Consumption2 = Consumption1 * (Speed2 / Speed1)³ Total bunker requirement is calculated by multiplying the adjusted daily rate by total transit duration, plus a standard 10% safety reserve.

Practical Input/Output Examples

Example 1
Input Data: Nominal Daily: 25 MT at 15 kts | Target Speed: 12 kts | Transit: 5 Days
Calculated Output: Daily Cons: 12.8 MT | Total Voyage Fuel Required: 70.4 MT (incl. reserve)
Example 2
Input Data: Nominal Daily: 40 MT at 18 kts | Target Speed: 16 kts | Transit: 10 Days
Calculated Output: Daily Cons: 28.1 MT | Total Voyage Fuel Required: 309.1 MT (incl. reserve)

Step-by-Step Operator Guide

  1. 1Input your vessel's base daily fuel consumption in Metric Tons (MT).
  2. 2Specify the nominal speed associated with that base consumption.
  3. 3Enter your planned transit speed and total distance to go.
  4. 4Select fuel type (VLSFO, LSMGO, or MDO) to estimate fuel costs.
  5. 5Review the optimized speed-consumption curves to find the charter economy speed.

Key Benefits

  • Assists chartering managers in preparing accurate voyage estimations.
  • Reduces environmental emissions by recommending slow steaming windows.
  • Prevents fuel outages on long ocean crossings.

Primary Use Cases

  • Voyage estimation and bunker planning during chartering fixtures.
  • Daily noon report audits by ship technical superintendents.
  • Developing energy efficiency plans (SEEMP) for carbon intensity compliance.
